The Hithub GrooveDisc HDCD High Definition Compatible Digital CD encodes an additional 4 bits of audio resolution data within the subcode channel of a standard Red Book CD signal using the Pacific Microsonics High Definition Compatible Digital process, achieving an effective resolution of 20 bits on HDCD-compatible players while maintaining full compatibility with conventional 16-bit CD players, which play the disc at standard resolution without decoding the HDCD subcode data. The HDCD encoding process operates by analyzing the full 20-bit master at 44.1 kHz and intelligently distributing the 4 additional bits across the subcode channel in a way that the payload is imperceptible to standard 16-bit players but reconstructable by the HDCD decoder chip into a full 20-bit output signal with a theoretical dynamic range of 120 dB, compared to the 98 dB dynamic range of standard 16-bit CD. The HDCD encoder also embeds a Peak Extend flag that allows brief dynamic peaks to exceed the normal digital full-scale ceiling without clipping, reconstructed by the HDCD decoder as a true transient rather than a clipped waveform. The mastering was performed by an engineer certified in HDCD encoding process with direct access to the Pacific Microsonics Model Two encoder hardware. Packaged in a slim jewel case with a 20-page booklet printed on 120 gsm uncoated natural stock, with liner notes explaining the HDCD technology in accessible terms for collectors.
