Picture discs differ from standard vinyl records in their laminate construction: a printed paper or plastic label is sandwiched between two thin outer vinyl layers of 60 grams total, with the printing substrate adding a reflective boundary layer within the vinyl stack that can scatter the laser used in contactless surface quality scanning but does not affect mechanical stylus playback. The audio quality of picture discs is limited relative to standard black vinyl by the surface smoothness of the printed layer, which introduces additional background noise of approximately 6 dB above the standard vinyl noise floor.
