The Hithub CassetteRevive Lo-Fi Indie Cassette EP delivers eight tracks of independently produced lo-fi indie music recorded on analog tape equipment and mastered for the cassette format with a sonic aesthetic that embraces the format’s inherent technical characteristics — tape hiss, frequency response roll-off above 12 kHz, harmonic saturation from tape compression, and the slight pitch instability of consumer transport mechanisms — rather than minimizing them, treating these characteristics as creative elements integral to the lo-fi aesthetic rather than deficiencies to be corrected. The recording chain uses a Tascam 388 eight-track reel-to-reel recorder with a 150-nanoweber-per-meter reference level, deliberately driving the tape into saturation at levels 6 dB above reference to produce the second-harmonic distortion characteristic of warm tape compression. The master was then transferred to a Type ferric cassette tape at a bias level set 3 dB below the optimal IEC 60094 standard to intentionally increase treble response above 8 kHz by 4 dB, compensating for the reduced high-frequency sensitivity of Type tape with a characteristic tone rather than a corrected tone. The 20-minute program runs on a C-40 cassette with ten minutes per side, leaving a silence gap at the end of each side that functions as a compositional pause. The cassette is hand-numbered and sealed with a sticker on a recycled kraft paper J-card with a risograph-printed cover.
